The 2025–2027 modernisation

A terminal in full transformation

Over €100 million invested over 27 months: a new 350 m piled quay, the rehabilitation of the 7-hectare yard and a rail connection to the Matadi–Kinshasa corridor.

Why modernise?

Kinshasa ranks among Africa’s largest metropolises, and its demand for imported goods grows every year. Yet the terminal inherited from past decades operated only around 250 m of quay [TO BE CONFIRMED], with a capacity of around 200,000 TEU per year [TO BE CONFIRMED]. For Matadi to remain the most direct route between the sea and the capital, a change of scale was needed: more quay frontage, a rebuilt yard, multimodal hinterland access. That is the purpose of the €100M+ investment programme undertaken by MCTC.

The project in detail

The works are being carried out by Eiffage Génie Civil Marine, a European leader in maritime infrastructure, over a period of 27 months (2025–2027). The programme comprises:

  • a new 350 m × 30 m piled quay, built in two phases (249 m, then +98 m for a frontage of 347 m);
  • 3 access trestles linking the quay to the yard;
  • the complete rehabilitation of the 7-hectare yard;
  • a rail connection to the CFMK (2 tracks), enabling direct container trains to Kinshasa;
  • a solar-powered operations building.

On completion, the terminal’s capacity will rise from 200,000 to 400,000 TEU per year.
